GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Mexican restaurant 7 Mares is cooking again on the southeast side, though for now its customers order at a food truck window instead of a dining room.

The restaurant at Adams Street and Kalamazoo Avenue SE was damaged by a fire in July. Grand Rapids Professional Firefighters Local 366 reported flames showing from the roof, and no one was hurt. The blaze began above the kitchen, and between it and heavy water damage the building at 1403 Kalamazoo Ave. SE had to close.

The family behind the business bought a truck after the fire so it could keep earning money while it sorts out insurance, financing and the requirements for repairing the old building. Six days a week, Tuesday to Sunday, the truck serves from noon until 7 p.m. on the lot facing the old dining room.

Open since 1999 and known for seafood, 7 Mares has also grown its catering work during the closure and added birria egg rolls to the menu. The family says it plans to reopen the restaurant, but rebuilding will take time.
