GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Two fishermen who lost their footing in the Grand River were brought to safety by Grand Rapids firefighters on Sunday morning, Oct. 18, and both were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Crews were sent out at about 7:30 a.m. after a call about two people in the water near the 6th Street Bridge. The pair had been wading off the east side of the bridge when they stepped into a deeper stretch of river.
One man got back on his feet but could not reach the bank because his waders had filled with water. Firefighters from the LaGrave station lowered a rescuer by rope off the seawall walkway behind DeVos Place to reach him, and he was guided toward the Fish Ladder boat launch.
The second man was carried downstream. A rescue boat that set out from Fish Ladder Park caught up with him just north of the I-196 overpass and pulled him aboard.
The fire department posted about the rescue on social media shortly before 8 a.m., noting that paramedics would meet crews at Fish Ladder Park.
