GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Two Grand Rapids business districts are about to see construction crews, the city said Monday, as a pair of projects paid for by local corridor improvement authorities moves from planning into the ground.
On the West Side, crews are expected within weeks to start putting up three gateway arches, one each in the Stockbridge, West Fulton and Leonard business districts. The West Side Corridor Improvement Authority is spending $1.7 million on the signs, which the city expects to be finished next spring.
Along Michigan Street, the corridor authority there is putting up to $75,000 into pedestrian safety work set to wrap up in November. Its money adds curb extensions that shorten the walk across the street to a grant-funded Mobile GR project that installs flashing beacons at the Houseman Avenue and Grand Avenue crossings.
Verah Narh Kamara, the city senior advisor who works with the corridor authorities, said the projects show the city lining up its departments behind plans that business and neighborhood leaders drew up for their own districts.
