Grand Rapids police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a female driver involved in a hit-and-run incident that left a male pedestrian injured on September 24, 2023. The incident occurred around 5:53 p.m. on Plainfield Avenue NE, just south of Elmdale Street. The pedestrian was attempting to cross the road when he was struck by the vehicle, resulting in serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and he was subsequently hospitalized.

Following the collision, the female driver briefly exited her vehicle before fleeing the scene. The suspect is described as being in her 20s or 30s, with black or brown hair styled in either a bun or ponytail. She is of medium height and has a thinner build. At the time of the incident, she was reportedly wearing a pink shirt, tan or orange leggings, sunglasses, and white shoes.

The vehicle involved in the hit-and-run is believed to be a Ford Escape, manufactured between 2008 and 2012. The color of the vehicle is possibly green, gray, or teal. There may be damage to the front end or hood of the vehicle, though this has not yet been confirmed.

The Grand Rapids Police Department’s Traffic Unit is currently investigating the incident. They are encouraging anyone with information related to the crash or the suspect’s identity to contact Officer Alex Thompson at (616) 456-3320. Additionally, tips can be submitted anonymously through Silent Observer by calling 616-774-2345 or via their website.

This incident adds to ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety on busy roads. Hit-and-run cases not only pose a significant risk to individuals crossing the street but also highlight the importance of driver responsibility. In recent years, pedestrian injuries have seen an uptick in both urban and suburban areas, emphasizing the need for individuals to remain vigilant while driving and for pedestrians to ensure they have the right of way before crossing.

The police department is committed to resolving this incident and urges the community to come forward with any available information that could lead to the identification of the suspect. Local authorities stress that even minor details could be crucial for the investigation.
