Grand Rapids is set to enhance its urban landscape by planting 100 new trees starting this fall. The Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has approved a budget of $111,000 to fund this initiative, which is a collaborative effort with the nonprofit group Friends of Grand Rapids Parks. The project aims to improve green spaces and strengthen the city’s urban canopy by replacing dead or dying trees and adding cover to areas that currently lack greenery.
The tree planting will take place along sidewalks and streets throughout downtown, with the project anticipated to be completed by spring 2026. The plan involves planting 50 trees in the fall of this year and another 50 in the spring of 2026. During this time, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks will be responsible for maintaining the newly planted trees for a period of two years.
Melvin Eledge, director of operations at Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. (DGRI), reported that the organization had reached its initial target of 10% tree canopy cover downtown ahead of schedule. The current focus of DGRI has shifted from increasing the number of new trees to prioritizing the maintenance and health of the existing urban canopy. A robust tree canopy is crucial for various environmental reasons, including oxygen production, air pollution filtration, traffic calming, rainwater absorption, noise reduction, increasing property values, and lowering stress levels among residents.
The funding for this tree initiative was approved by the DDA on October 8, demonstrating the city’s commitment to improving its urban environment. Alongside the new tree plantings, there will be a focus on maintaining the right-of-way trees, which often suffer from high mortality rates. This focus is important to protect the investment being made in the urban forest.
The grand vision for Grand Rapids includes a long-term goal of achieving a 40% tree canopy cover across the city. Currently, to meet this target, a total of 1,640 acres of canopy must be established within approximately 7,000 acres of suitable planting areas. This ambitious canopy initiative began as part of DGRI’s Tree Canopy campaign in 2009, with an original target of 10% canopy cover to be met by 2025; this goal has already been accomplished as of last year.
Under the approved contract pertaining to this project, the contractors involved will also be responsible for updating the urban canopy inventory every two years. This measure will help the DDA and DGRI continuously monitor the health and growth of the urban forest, ensuring that Grand Rapids maintains a vibrant and sustainable urban canopy for the future.
The establishment of a healthy urban forest is not only seen as a vital asset for downtown but also for the overall quality of life for Grand Rapids residents. As the city continues to grow, it will benefit from efforts to enhance its green spaces and promote environmental stewardship, which contributes positively to the community’s well-being.
