GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A 36-year-old man, Hollis Clifton Nunnery III, has been charged with bank robbery and armed robbery following an incident at the Lake Michigan Credit Union on October 20. The robbery unfolded around 9:40 a.m. when Nunnery threatened a teller while implying he was armed.
During the robbery, Nunnery approached the teller and demanded she place all the money in a bag he provided, making it clear that non-compliance would have violent consequences. The teller complied and handed over $1,716 in cash, after which Nunnery ordered her to sit on the floor before fleeing the scene.
Critical evidence connected to the case emerged from surveillance footage, which showed Nunnery wearing distinctive worn-out white and blue tennis shoes and displaying an orange wrapping on one of his fingers. The unique footwear aided law enforcement in identifying the suspect.
Hours after the robbery, police received images of Nunnery, leading to his identification near downtown Grand Rapids. Officers spotted a man fitting the description, wearing similar tennis shoes, near Planet Fitness on Market Avenue SW. When approached by the officers, Nunnery attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended after a brief struggle.
During the arrest, several hundred dollars fell from Nunnery, including four $10 bills that matched the “bait money” the teller had placed in the bag during the robbery. This evidence reinforced the connection between Nunnery and the crime.
Nunnery is currently being held in the Kent County Jail on a bond of $500,000. This incident marks a significant point in his ongoing criminal history, which includes previous charges for armed robbery, felony firearms, carrying a concealed weapon, and embezzlement. He had been released from jail in May 2025 following an embezzlement sentence.
This bank robbery has raised concerns among the community and local law enforcement, emphasizing the ongoing issues related to violent crime and repeat offenders. Police urge anyone with further information about the incident or Nunnery’s activities to contact the Grand Rapids Police Department as investigations continue.
