Grand Rapids, Mich. — Republican Sen. Mark Huizenga of Walker is defending his 30th District seat in the Michigan Senate against Democratic state Rep. Carol Glanville, also of Walker, in one of the Grand Rapids area’s most closely watched races.
The general election is Nov. 3. Glanville defeated Richard Kreuzer in the Democratic primary on Aug. 4, while Huizenga advanced from the Republican primary the same day. Huizenga first won the seat in 2022, defeating David LaGrand and Theo Petzold.
At a candidate accountability forum hosted by the advocacy group Together West Michigan, both candidates said they would support a Michigan child care tax credit, expanding the TriShare child care benefit program and funding for Grand Rapids public transportation.
The Drive SAFE bills, which would let under-documented immigrants obtain state driver’s licenses, split the field along party lines. Glanville said she supports them. Huizenga said he could not commit to a bill until he sees the final version.
In the neighboring 29th District, Republican Brady Middleton and Democrat Abbie Groff-Blaszak are competing for the seat held by term-limited Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks.
