News Summary

Rosalind Ebrom is reshaping the hospital experience at Trinity Health Grand Rapids as an art curator. With 19 years in healthcare art curation, she emphasizes the therapeutic benefits of art in healing spaces, promoting patient recovery and emotional well-being. Her initiatives include collaborations with local artists and seasonal artwork to enhance the hospital ambiance, contributing to a holistic patient care strategy that integrates various complementary therapies.

Grand Rapids, Michigan – Rosalind Ebrom is revolutionizing the hospital experience at Trinity Health Grand Rapids through her unique role as an art curator. With a background that includes 19 years dedicated to enhancing healthcare settings with art, Ebrom’s work aims to create a healing environment that aids in patient recovery and emotional well-being.

Having begun her career in healthcare as a candy striper at the age of 13, Ebrom experienced firsthand the often sterile and uninspired aesthetics of hospitals. This early exposure motivated her to find ways to transform these environments. Nineteen years ago, she embraced the role of Art Curator, focusing on the positive effects of art in healthcare settings. Her dedication culminated in the establishment of the Art and Ambiance Committee at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s in 2006, inspired by the vision of former president and CEO Phil McCorkle, who championed the healing power of art.

Ebrom’s role as a volunteer art curator at Trinity Health Grand Rapids is distinctive in the healthcare sector, as it combines her nursing background with an expertise in art curation. She underscores the significance of art in healing spaces, stating that it serves a purpose that extends beyond mere decoration. The art selected for display at Trinity Health is carefully aligned with established policies that prioritize inspirational pieces, calming colors, and avoid any aggressive or identifiable imagery.

Initially, Ebrom emphasized art placement during the architectural design of the hospital’s seventh and eighth floors, which are undergoing renovation. A theme that celebrates the seasonal beauty of Michigan has been proposed for these wings, ensuring resonance with both patients and visitors. The hospital also features seasonal artwork displayed throughout its facilities, and guest artists are invited to showcase their work in the main lobby for three months at a time.

Ebrom collaborates closely with each guest artist from selection through installation, promoting their artwork and ensuring it meets the hospital’s vision for healing. As part of this initiative, 25% of the proceeds from any art sales are donated to the Foundation, providing support to local Michigan artists.

One such guest artist, Ellie Harold, has illustrated the emotional connection her colorful bird-themed artwork fosters among patients. This connection not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the environment but also plays a significant role in providing comfort and reflection during what can be taxing hospital stays. The positive influence of art on emotional well-being is increasingly evident, with studies noting its capacity to facilitate healing.

The art initiative at Trinity Health Grand Rapids is part of a broader holistic patient care strategy that includes complementary therapies such as music therapy and pet-assisted therapy, alongside wellness lounges aimed at enriching the experience for staff. These efforts collectively promote comfort and wellbeing that extend beyond just physical recovery, recognizing the importance of mental and emotional health in the healing process.

The Foundation is also proactive in sharing the impact of art on wellness, engaging with the community through social media initiatives and outreach programs aimed at fostering a connection between the hospital and local artists. By creating an inspiring environment through art, Rosalind Ebrom and her team at Trinity Health Grand Rapids are redefining the role of art in healthcare, demonstrating that a well-thought-out atmosphere can significantly enhance the healing journey for patients and visitors alike.
