Grand Rapids, Michigan – The Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) campus police have reported a series of incidents over the last few weeks, ranging from smoking violations to theft and trespassing. These events occurred primarily between July 21 and August 6, raising concerns about safety and compliance with campus policies.

On July 21 at approximately 8:35 p.m., a campus police officer approached a man smoking at the south commons charging tables. The officer informed him that GRCC is a smoke-free campus, and the man promptly extinguished his cigarette after acknowledging the rule. He provided identification indicating he was from Grant, Michigan, and assured the officer he would leave the premises shortly.

Later that day, at 5:49 p.m., another officer encountered a different man smoking in the south stairwell of Parking Ramp A. This individual was initially uncooperative and unwilling to show his student ID. After further interactions, he was found smoking again and issued a trespassing ticket. The man was given a directive to appear in court within ten days to address the violation.

Earlier that same day, officers responded to a situation at the GRCC Enrollment Center around 1 p.m. A distressed student was reportedly having a contentious discussion with an associate director regarding her academic suspension and financial aid problems. The officers intervened to facilitate a calm dialogue, which ultimately helped the student understand the seriousness of her situation and the implications for her tuition.

In a separate incident, on July 29 at 10:09 a.m., a student reported the theft of her black nylon wallet from a study room in the GRCC Science Building. The wallet went missing from her unattended backpack, but due to a lack of surveillance cameras in the area, no suspects were identified.

Another theft was reported on July 30 at 10:12 a.m. A superintendent from Christman construction informed campus police about an iPad stolen from the Ford Fieldhouse. Surveillance footage revealed that a male suspect, described by distinctive tattoos and clothing, entered the building around 4:32 a.m. However, the investigation faced complications due to inoperable security cameras as a result of ongoing construction at the site.

On July 31 at 4:26 p.m., an officer addressed a misunderstanding involving a student who was incorrectly reported as trespassing. The student was simply waiting for a scheduled meeting with a financial aid advisor, not engaged in any wrongful behavior.

In a more alarming incident on August 6, at 8:56 p.m., officers removed a man found sleeping in the Applied Technology Center. The individual was uncooperative when asked for identification and later confirmed he was not a student. He was issued a verbal trespass warning and escorted off campus.

Additionally, a professor at GRCC reported concerns related to potential stalking by a former student. This troubling situation has been ongoing since the previous winter semester and has persisted through August 2024. The professor described various unwanted interactions, including notes and gifts from the former student expressing a desire to maintain contact after the individual was removed from the program. The professor sought assistance from campus police for managing this distressing situation and requested notifications should the former student attempt to reconnect.

These reports offer a glimpse into the underlying challenges facing campus safety and the importance of compliance with established regulations at GRCC. The campus police are actively responding to these incidents to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff members.
