Grand Rapids has introduced a breathtaking new addition to its ArtPrize 2025 lineup with the opening of the Arborialis Luminarium, a 9,000-square-foot inflatable art installation created by the UK-based Architects of Air. This captivating structure is designed to alter visitors’ perceptions of light and color and is currently on display at 555 Monroe Ave. NW, continuing through Saturday, October 4, 2025.
The Arborialis Luminarium is the brainchild of British artist Alan Parkinson, whose company has been bringing similar installations to audiences worldwide for over three decades, starting from its origins in Nottingham, England. John Owens, a manager with Architects of Air, highlights that the luminarium’s unique feature is the absence of white light, which provides an opportunity for visitors to escape the outside environment.
The installation includes multiple chambers featuring three colored domes and a central dome that rises three stories high. This central dome, resembling an “onion dome” similar to those found in cathedrals, filters natural daylight through a PVC material that is only a third of a millimeter thick. This design creates an otherworldly atmosphere, where colors change and appear distinct from the normal spectrum, enhancing the immersive experience.
As visitors navigate through the different colored chambers, each decorated with intricate leaf motif patterns, the ambiance is further enriched by the ambient sounds produced by “Song of Danu,” composed by Dr. Michael Morris. This combination of sound and visual elements aims to transport attendees into a dreamlike state in contrast with reality.
Accessibility is a priority for the Arborialis Luminarium; it caters to individuals of all ages and abilities, including infants and senior citizens. While many ArtPrize installations are free, the luminarium operates as a ticketed experience, separate from the broader festival events. It is important to note that the luminarium is not an official ArtPrize entry and is not eligible for public voting.
The exhibition is open daily, excluding Mondays, from 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Ticket holders must arrive 10 minutes prior to their scheduled time for priority entry, and the last entry for visitors is at 5:30 PM. While presale tickets are available online at reduced prices, guests are required to remove their shoes before entering the installation to maintain cleanliness.
For those aged 21 and older, an on-site beer garden will be available, providing an opportunity to relax and enjoy refreshments before or after visiting the installation. A small queue is anticipated even for those holding tickets, so planning accordingly is advised to minimize wait times.
ArtPrize festivities officially kick off on Friday, September 19, 2025, and will include live music and programming at Rosa Parks Circle. The opening day will culminate in an exciting parade and fireworks display. This year’s ArtPrize features over 1,100 artists showcasing their work at more than 150 venues, solidifying its status as one of the largest art festivals in the world.
Additionally, the 2025 festival will debut new exhibitions, including the “Olympism Art Genre” exhibition at the Downtown Market, inviting contributions from attendees. As Grand Rapids embraces the diverse art showcased during ArtPrize 2025, the Arborialis Luminarium stands out as a must-visit experience.
