Grand Rapids – Construction on the new Amway Stadium has officially commenced in downtown Grand Rapids, following a ceremonial groundbreaking event. The stadium is set to hold 8,500 seats and is anticipated to cost approximately $175 million.

The funding for the stadium development will be sourced from both public and private financing, which includes $33 million from Amway for the naming rights, in addition to an increase in the Kent County hotel tax. The facility is expected to be operational by spring 2027 and will primarily serve as the home venue for a professional soccer team participating in the MLS Next Pro league.

Upon completion, the Amway Stadium is projected to host around 17 home soccer matches each season, alongside an estimated 50 additional events spanning various types of activities. The Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority will oversee the ownership and operation of the stadium.

The estimated construction period for the stadium is approximately two years, with the first soccer match scheduled for spring 2027. The development is anticipated to draw an estimated 160,000 visitors to downtown Grand Rapids each season, contributing significantly to the local economy.

The stadium project is expected to create 330 new jobs within the community and generate an economic impact surpassing $400 million for Grand Rapids over the next 30 years. As part of the construction efforts, the YMCA parking lot located nearby will close next week, prompting adjustments for local members.

In response to the parking changes, YMCA members will be permitted to park at the Seward parking ramp at Grand Valley State University free of charge for up to two and a half hours. This ramp is conveniently situated directly across the street from the YMCA on Lake Michigan Drive. It is important to note that parking at the Seward ramp will be reserved exclusively for YMCA members, excluding school staff and students.

The Amway Stadium is designed to include several amenities to enhance visitor experiences, such as a team store, private suites, and an on-site restaurant. At a broader level, city officials, including Grand Rapids Mayor David LaGrand, have expressed optimism regarding the stadium’s potential to act as a catalyst for further development in the downtown area. There are hopes that it will stimulate new housing developments as well as the growth of local businesses.

The commencement of the Amway Stadium project marks a significant milestone for Grand Rapids as it aims to promote sports and entertainment, further enhancing the city’s reputation as a vibrant hub for community activities and events.
