Q&A sessions will be held for affected staff to address concerns. The closure reflects a broader trend in higher education focused on improving service delivery and student success metrics.

Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) announced the closure of its College Success Center, effective August 18, as part of an initiative to enhance student advising and support services. The decision was communicated by interim president George Triezenburg in a letter to GRCC employees on July 17.

The College Success Center has provided critical resources for students needing additional support, including access to success coaches, workshops, and academic aid. The closure is part of a broader restructuring effort within GRCC’s Academic and Student Affairs aimed at improving the overall advising experience for students.

In his message, Triezenburg detailed the college’s commitment to enhancing support services while engaging in discussions with key stakeholders, including the Faculty Association, to ensure the successful implementation of these changes.

Details of the Closure

The College Success Center currently employs eight staff members: six success coaches, one support professional, and a department director. Following the closure, these staff members will transition into temporary full-time academic advisor roles, with an opportunity to apply for permanent positions after one year. Marisol Blanco, the department director, will be appointed as the interim associate dean of strategic outreach, while support professional Sondra Davis will move to Retention Services.

Impact on Staff and Students

The recent announcements have led to visible distress among employees, with several expressing concern when approached for comments. The restructuring aims not only to strengthen the support network traditionally associated with the Success Center but also to reduce the caseloads that advising counselors currently manage and minimize program overlaps.

Provost Sheila Jones and Associate Provost of Student Affairs Ann Isackson are scheduled to hold Q&A sessions to address concerns from affected staff. These sessions will take place on July 24 from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and July 25 from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. This opportunity aims to clarify the implications of the restructuring and gather feedback from staff.

Background Context

The College Success Center has been a vital resource for students at GRCC, providing essential support that has enabled many to navigate their academic journeys successfully. As higher education institutions increasingly focus on student success metrics, GRCC’s restructuring reflects an ongoing trend to improve service delivery and effectiveness within academic advising.

By consolidating resources and personnel, college leadership hopes to create a more streamlined advising experience that meets the growing demands of the student body. This shift is expected to align more closely with the college’s strategic goals of fostering student retention and success.

As GRCC prepares for these changes, the college community is encouraged to remain engaged and informed about how these adjustments will unfold in the coming weeks and months.
