Grand Rapids, Michigan – Abdul El-Sayed has officially launched his campaign for the U.S. Senate in Grand Rapids, aiming for the seat currently held by outgoing Democratic Senator Gary Peters ahead of the 2026 election. The former director of Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human and Veteran Services, El-Sayed held a rally at Fountain Street Church, where dozens of supporters gathered to hear his vision for addressing pressing health and economic issues in the state.
In an interview with local media, El-Sayed explained his transition from being a physician to entering the Senate race. He expressed a strong commitment to advocacy and leadership at the federal level, emphasizing the importance of tackling issues like medical debt, rising living costs, and public health challenges. His candidacy comes in the wake of federal funding freezes he observed during the Trump administration, which further motivated him to run after Senator Peters announced he would not seek re-election.
El-Sayed, who previously ran for governor in 2018 and finished second in the Democratic primary, highlighted his previous experience and community engagement as key assets he would bring to the Senate. Alongside him in the Democratic primary are several contenders, including State Senator Mallory McMorrow and U.S. Representative Haley Stevens. Former U.S. Representative Mike Rogers is also expected to challenge in the Republican primary.
During his campaign, El-Sayed called attention to the crucial role that federal funding plays in Michigan’s economy, noting that 43% of the state’s budget is supported by federal funds. He underscored the need for federal leadership to combat rising healthcare costs and improve public health resources for residents. El-Sayed criticized the previous administration for its detrimental impact on vital programs, asserting that a proactive federal response is necessary to reverse negative trends affecting everyday citizens.
Characterizing West Michigan as a “crossroads” for its diverse communities, El-Sayed has stressed the importance of understanding local residents’ concerns and experiences. He aims to foster direct engagement with voters, emphasizing transparency and a commitment to listening. He believes that Democrats must present a clear, optimistic narrative that counters negative influences and effectively addresses the systemic issues that contributed to the recent political climate.
El-Sayed has gained notable attention since his gubernatorial bid and mentioned that previous endorsements, including one from U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, have shaped his political identity. He is aware of the competitive landscape in the Democratic primary but remains confident in his ability to communicate his vision for Michigan voters.
Additionally, El-Sayed criticized the current political system regarding the filibuster, labeling it as “anti-democratic” and calling for reforms that would allow progressive legislation to advance more effectively. He advocates for a united movement to ensure support for everyday people and push back against the impacts of previous administrations.
As he embarks on this new chapter, El-Sayed is committed to addressing the critical issues facing Michigan’s residents and is prepared to engage with the electorate, aiming to inspire a sense of community and optimism around his campaign for the U.S. Senate.
