News Summary

The Grand Rapids Public Library will host two free art workshops in June for teens and adults. The workshops, focused on painting and photography, aim to inspire creativity and provide hands-on experiences. Participants can learn essential techniques from local artists in a supportive environment. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Grand Rapids – The Grand Rapids Public Library (GRPL) is set to host two complimentary art workshops for teens and adults in June. The first workshop, an “Introduction to Painting,” is scheduled for June 10, 2025, while the second workshop, titled “Art Basics: Headshot and Still Life Photography,” will take place on June 18, 2025. Both workshops aim to inspire creativity and provide hands-on experiences to community members.

The painting workshop will take place at The DAAC building, located at 1553 Plainfield Ave, starting at 6 p.m., and will be conducted by local painter and tattoo artist Carlos Sampson. Participants will gain insights into essential painting techniques, covering concepts such as color theory, brushwork, and composition. The GRPL has partnered with The DAAC for this engaging class, enriching the artistic experience for attendees.

The second offering, the photography workshop slated for June 18, 2025, will also begin at 6 p.m. This session, held at Muse GR, located at 727 Leonard St, will be taught by Stephen Smith. Attendees can expect to learn about the fundamentals of photography, including aspects like lighting, composition, and camera settings. These skills are intended to enhance participants’ photography knowledge and abilities.

Space for both workshops is limited, and participants are encouraged to register on a first-come, first-served basis. This free initiative is aimed at fostering a low-pressure environment where individuals can explore their artistic side without the burden of financial constraints.

GRPL’s ongoing commitment to providing creative programs illustrates the library’s dedication to community engagement and artistic expression. Jason Kotarski, the regional branch manager at GRPL, has noted the importance of offering creative opportunities that allow patrons to take risks and try new things in a supportive setting. The library plans to continue this effort by introducing additional creative programs throughout the year catering to individuals of all ages.

The library’s approach to hosting free workshops reflects its mission of increasing access to art and creativity within the community, encouraging participants to embrace their artistic potential. With sessions designed to accommodate learners of varying skill levels, the GRPL reaffirms its role as a vital community resource for artistic development.

Both the “Introduction to Painting” and “Art Basics: Headshot and Still Life Photography” workshops are expected to be enriching experiences for participants, allowing them to harness their creativity while learning from local professionals. As the June workshops approach, interested individuals are advised to secure their spots early to avoid missing out on these unique opportunities.
