Grand Rapids, Michigan, is celebrating its 175th anniversary of incorporation with a year-long series of events honoring its rich history and community spirit. The main celebration will take place on June 7 at Rosa Parks Circle, featuring live entertainment, food, and exhibits that highlight the city’s remarkable journey since its founding in 1850. Activities like a scavenger hunt and a traveling mobile museum exhibit will engage residents and visitors throughout the year.
Grand Rapids, Michigan is gearing up for a year-long celebration marking its 175th anniversary of city incorporation, which was formally recognized on May 2, 1850. The milestone is significant as it highlights the city’s rich history, cultural evolution, and community spirit.
At the time of incorporation, Grand Rapids had a modest population of 2,686 residents. It was previously classified as an incorporated village before officially gaining city status. The area has a deep-rooted history, originally inhabited for thousands of years by the Hopewell Indian tribe. The first permanent white settler, Isaac McCoy, arrived in Grand Rapids in 1825, paving the way for future development.
In 1826, a pivotal moment occurred when Louis Campau located a trading post on land he purchased from the federal government for just $90. This land now comprises the entire downtown business district of Grand Rapids, marking the city’s initial foray into urban development.
Throughout its history, Grand Rapids has earned notable nicknames such as “Furniture City” and “Beer City U.S.A.” It also made a significant public health advancement in 1945 by becoming the first city in the United States to add fluoride to its public drinking water supply.
The highlight of the celebratory events will be the official birthday party scheduled for Saturday, June 7, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Rosa Parks Circle. This gathering promises to be a family-friendly affair featuring live entertainment, an assortment of activities, local food including cake, and exhibits that showcase the city’s historical journey.
Additional happenings include a scavenger hunt for both residents and visitors, alongside a guided walking tour that will allow attendees to explore notable and historical points within the city. To further commemorate the 175th anniversary, a mobile museum exhibit titled “175 Pictures for 175 Years” will feature 175 photographs of iconic Grand Rapids landmarks and will travel to various locations across the city throughout the year.
The city is also promoting community engagement through a commemorative poster contest, allowing residents to participate in the celebrations creatively. To honor this momentous occasion, a limited-edition commemorative beer will be brewed and released, further enhancing the festivities surrounding the anniversary.
Officials encourage local businesses and community members to embrace the 175th anniversary logo in events and branding to unify the celebrations. Assistant City Manager Doug Matthews and others involved in the celebration express excitement regarding the milestone, emphasizing it as an opportunity to reflect on the city’s rich history and envision its future. Grand Rapids adopted a home-rule charter in 1916, making it one of the first cities in the nation to do so, highlighting its commitment to self-governance.
Historically known as Owashtenong by the Anishinaabeg tribes, the area has seen considerable growth and change since its inception. By 1857, the city boundaries had expanded to total 10.5 square miles, illustrating its development over the years and laying the foundation for what would become a vibrant urban center.
As Grand Rapids prepares for a year of celebrations, it invites all community members to participate in honoring the past while looking forward to a promising future.
