Grand Rapids – Hollis C. Nunnery, a 36-year-old man, has been charged with armed robbery and bank robbery, both classified as life offense felonies. The alleged bank robbery took place on October 20 at the Lake Michigan Credit Union, situated at 1820 Leonard St NE, around 9:40 a.m.

According to reports, a bank teller indicated that Nunnery threatened her during the robbery, demanding that she put all the money in a bag and implied he would use his weapon if she did not comply. The teller complied, handing over money totaling $1,716. Additionally, Nunnery took five $10 bills that were marked as bait money, identifiable by specific serial numbers.

Security footage from the bank helped law enforcement identify Nunnery as a Black man wearing large sunglasses, a black jacket, and distinctive worn-out white and blue tennis shoes. Following the robbery, reports indicated a suspect fleeing the scene, prompting a swift police search that resulted in locating Nunnery a few hours later in downtown Grand Rapids.

Upon police contact, Nunnery reportedly fled into a local Planet Fitness facility. He was apprehended inside after a short struggle with officers. During the arrest, several hundred dollars fell from him, and police later identified four of those bills as the bait money taken from the bank. At the time of his arrest, law enforcement recovered a total of $653 from Nunnery.

During questioning, Nunnery was largely uncooperative but was noted to have a tattoo on his right hand and a bandaged finger that matched the description given by the teller. His first court appearance took place virtually on October 22, where the prosecution requested a cash bond due to his extensive criminal record. The court subsequently set a cash or surety bond at $500,000, reflecting concerns regarding community safety and the severity of the charges against him.

While the case is ongoing, Nunnery is prohibited from possessing firearms or dangerous weapons. He also has an active theft case in Lake County, Indiana, involving several store thefts totaling over $2,000 from incidents reported in September.

Nunnery’s criminal history is significant, encompassing prior convictions for armed robbery, felony weapon offenses, and assaulting a police officer, alongside recent embezzlement charges. Records indicate that he was released from parole in May 2025 after serving time for previous offenses. Furthermore, federal convictions related to firearm possession have previously linked him to a series of bank robberies that were under investigation by the FBI.
