News Summary

The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced a $30 million replacement of the Martin Luther King Jr. Street bridge in downtown Grand Rapids. This 700-foot project is scheduled for next year and aims for completion by 2026. A public meeting is set to engage residents on the project details. In addition, renovations on the historic Gillett Bridge will commence soon, ensuring vital infrastructure upgrades in the area.

Grand Rapids Plans Major Bridge Renovations

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced plans to replace 700 feet of the Martin Luther King Jr. Street bridge, originally built in the 1920s, in downtown Grand Rapids next year. This replacement will stretch from the northbound U.S. 131 ramps to the east end of the bridge and is estimated to cost $30 million. The project is expected to be completed by 2026.

Public Meeting Scheduled

To discuss the project details, MDOT will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, June 25, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Fire Department located at 115 Martin Luther King Jr. St. SE. Residents are encouraged to attend to learn more about the project, provide feedback, and ask any questions they may have.

MDOT officials will present information about the project timeline, traffic impacts, and construction updates during the meeting. On-street parking will be available along Graham and Ionia streets, and attendees are advised to enter the fire station from Graham Street.

Renovations for Gillett Bridge

In addition to the Martin Luther King Jr. Street bridge, MDOT is set to undertake renovations on the Gillett Bridge, a structure that is nearly 110 years old. This renovation will include replacing the deck surface, conducting minor repairs, sandblasting, painting railings, and refurbishing decorative light fixtures. The cost for the Gillett Bridge renovations is approximately $866,000, funded by the city and the downtown development authority.

The Gillett Bridge, which is nearly 500 feet long, was constructed for trolley cars in the early 1900s and has since evolved to serve as an important thoroughfare for pedestrians, art installations, and community events. The renovation is anticipated to close the bridge in early July, with plans to reopen it after the Labor Day weekend.

Traffic and Support Information

As the Martin Luther King Jr. Street bridge replacement project progresses, MDOT anticipates some traffic impacts. The agency is committed to providing residents with up-to-date information on work schedules and detours to minimize disruption. According to the office of Governor Gretchen Whitmer, MDOT expects to have repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges by the end of the current construction season, underscoring their dedication to improving infrastructure across the state.

Support for Residents

MDOT offers assistance for individuals who may need mobility, visual, hearing, written, or other types of support during these bridge projects. Residents can reach out to Orlando Curry at 517-241-7462 or via email at CurryO@Michigan.gov for any assistance required.

Conclusion

With significant upgrades planned for the Martin Luther King Jr. Street and Gillett bridges, downtown Grand Rapids is poised to enhance its infrastructure and continue providing essential services to residents and visitors. The public meeting presents an opportunity for community engagement and transparency regarding these important projects.
