An indoor soccer training facility has gained unanimous approval in Wyoming. There’s also an expansion planned for the Kentwood Department of Public Works and a new apartment complex proposed in Lowell. These projects reflect the ongoing growth and infrastructure needs of the region.
Grand Rapids – Four significant development projects are under review in the Grand Rapids area this April, including a retail strip mall, an indoor athletic training facility, an expansion of the Kentwood Department of Public Works (DPW), and a new apartment complex in Lowell.
A proposed retail strip mall measuring 11,143 square feet is set to be developed on Broadmoor Avenue (M-37) in Caledonia Township. The design includes multiple retail spaces and a carry-out restaurant, along with provision for 53 parking spaces. Concerns regarding the project’s compliance with architectural standards and aesthetic issues, especially regarding parking along Broadmoor Avenue, were raised at a planning commission meeting on April 21. The project has been tabled pending necessary revisions and will undergo a traffic study by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
In Wyoming, a new 6,500-square-foot indoor soccer training facility has received unanimous approval from the planning commission on April 15. Located at 1545 Clyde Park Ave. SW, the facility will house two futsal courts, along with viewing areas, bathrooms, and a reception area. The facility will accommodate various activities, including rentals, pick-up games, leagues, and private training sessions for soccer enthusiasts.
A significant expansion of the Kentwood DPW building is on the agenda, seeking to add 35,000 square feet to its existing facility at 5068 Breton Ave. SE. This expansion will introduce a new fire training facility designed for the training of firefighters, police officers, and DPW staff. Additional plans include a 3,464-square-foot office expansion, as well as enhanced vehicle and maintenance space. During a planning commission meeting on April 8, the commission approved the rezoning of 17.93 acres of land from low-density residential to Open Space to facilitate this development.
A new apartment complex is proposed for 1160 West Main St. in Lowell, aiming to provide 72 residential units. This project is spearheaded by the Grand Rapids-based Wheeler Development Group. While the developer has submitted a basic outline of the project, a complete application has yet to be received. The development will consist of three buildings, each containing 24 units, which will be constructed on the southern half of the property, currently owned by Greenridge Realty.
These proposed developments reflect ongoing growth in the Grand Rapids area, indicating a need for more retail options, recreational facilities, public infrastructure, and housing. While the projects demonstrate the city’s commitment to meeting the needs of its residents, discussions surrounding compliance, aesthetics, and community impact remain crucial as plans progress.
As the planning processes continue, stakeholders, including community members and officials, will be watching the developments closely to ensure alignment with regional planning goals and community values.
