This surge is part of a larger trend affecting local prices, which are currently higher than a month ago but lower than last year. The disparity among local gas stations highlights varying rates, while the national average has seen a slight decrease. Consumers are navigating these fluctuating prices amidst broader economic factors impacting fuel costs.

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Gas prices in Grand Rapids have surged by more than 11 cents per gallon in the past week, now averaging $3.24 as of Monday. This 11.2-cent increase is part of a more extensive trend where local gas prices are currently 17.1 cents higher than they were just a month ago. Despite this recent spike, prices in Grand Rapids remain 6.4 cents lower than the same period last year.

The fluctuation in gas prices extends beyond Grand Rapids, as the national average has seen a decline of 1.8 cents per gallon, settling at $3.07. Over the past month, the national average has decreased by 5.2 cents, which is 32.8 cents cheaper than the prices recorded a year ago.

In Grand Rapids, there is noticeable variability among gas stations, with the cheapest option available at $2.89 per gallon and the highest at $3.39, creating a spread of 50 cents. Throughout Michigan, the disparity is even more pronounced, with the lowest-priced station offering gas at $2.69 per gallon while the highest charges an astounding $4.84, leading to a notable difference of $2.15 statewide.

Recent history shows that gas prices in Grand Rapids peaked at $5.18 per gallon in June 2022. Conversely, during June 2020, prices dropped to a low of $2.07 per gallon. Neighboring markets exhibit mixed trends, with Lansing seeing an increase of 11.8 cents to reach $3.10 per gallon. In Kalamazoo, prices also rose by 6.7 cents, bringing the total to $3.06 per gallon. However, South Bend, Indiana, contrasted this trend with an 11-cent decrease, lowering prices to $3.01 per gallon.

On a national scale, diesel prices have also dropped by 1.7 cents to $3.448 per gallon over the past week, indicating a broader shift in fuel costs. Additional data from AAA reveals that the average gas price in Michigan as a whole increased by 9 cents from the previous week, now standing at $3.17 per gallon. Within Metro Detroit, the average price is noted at $3.15 per gallon, which is 3 cents lower than the previous week.

The most expensive gas prices in Michigan are reported in Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids, both sitting at $3.22 per gallon. Conversely, markets such as Marquette and Traverse City offer gas below $3 a gallon, with prices marked at $2.98 and $2.99 respectively.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, highlighted that while national gas prices have generally declined, some states continue to experience “price cycling,” suggesting that the volatility in prices may persist in certain areas.

As gas prices fluctuate, consumers remain vigilant in seeking the best available rates, while state and national economic conditions continue to impact fuel pricing. The ongoing changes in gas prices are a critical concern for many drivers, and understanding these trends is essential for making informed decisions about fuel purchases.

Overall, the increase in Grand Rapids gas prices amid a nationwide decline presents a complex picture of the current fuel market, which continues to be influenced by various economic factors and regional dynamics.
