Grand Rapids – The City of Grand Rapids has announced important closures and schedule changes for Labor Day weekend, set for September 1. All non-emergency city offices and departments will be closed on Labor Day, along with the Butterworth Yard Waste and Compost site. Additionally, all locations of the Grand Rapids Public Library (GRPL) will be shut down for the holiday.
Library branches such as Madison Square, Ottawa Hills, Van Belkum, and West Side will also be closed on Saturday, August 31, with regular city operations scheduled to resume on Tuesday, September 2. The GRPL’s Main Library will return to its Sunday hours starting September 7.
Due to the holiday, trash, recycling, and yard waste collection services will be delayed by one day throughout the week. However, many city services will remain accessible online at grandrapidsmi.gov, ensuring that residents can still apply for permits and access other essential services.
Traffic data revealed that an average of 5,361 vehicles travel daily on Lake Michigan Drive, while Valley Avenue sees around 2,256 vehicles. The intersection of Lake Michigan Drive and Valley Avenue recently reopened after a month of closure for upgrades, during which improvements were made to curb lines to slow traffic speeds in the roundabout.
Following Labor Day, contractors are set to close westbound Lake Michigan Drive for a few days to install stormwater infiltration systems. In preparation for the holiday weekend, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will suspend work on 61% of ongoing road projects to ease traffic congestion. Lane restrictions for 100 of 164 projects will be lifted starting at 3 p.m. on Friday, August 29, and will be reinstated on Tuesday morning, September 2. However, major road closures related to the annual bridge walk event to the Upper Peninsula remain in effect.
Motorists are advised to ensure their vehicles are well-maintained before travel to avoid any disruptions. Various Labor Day events are planned throughout West Michigan, offering residents and visitors numerous activities to enjoy during the holiday weekend.
