The incident occurred a day after Alicia filed for divorce, leading to a violent confrontation where she was shot 15 times. Lofton, who displayed no emotion during sentencing, accepted a plea deal after a mistrial. This case highlights the severe consequences of domestic violence and its impact on families.

Grand Rapids – Marcus Durayalle Lofton, a 44-year-old man, has been sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison for the second-degree murder of his wife, 38-year-old Alicia Lofton. This sentencing follows the tragic events of August 17, 2023, when Lofton shot Alicia 15 times, a day after she served him with divorce papers.

The court detailed that the murder took place during a violent altercation that emerged in the wake of Alicia’s decision to end their marriage. The couple had been known to have a troubled relationship, marked by frequent arguments often stemming from minor disputes. Just before the fatal incident, Lofton was in the process of preparing to move out when a confrontation escalated, resulting in Alicia attempting to flee through a bedroom window.

In a violent act of rage, Lofton forced open the door and shot Alicia multiple times, leading to her death outside their home. The Grand Rapids police later found Alicia’s body positioned next to the couple’s residence. Officers apprehended Lofton a few blocks away from the crime scene shortly after the shooting.

Initially charged with felony murder, Lofton’s first trial ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury. Rather than face a second trial, he opted for a plea deal, which led to his guilty plea for second-degree murder and related felony firearm charges. In addition to the murder sentence, Judge Scott Noto imposed an extra two-year prison term for the firearms charge, which Lofton is required to serve before beginning his time for murder.

During the sentencing hearing, family members of the victim expressed profound pain and anger toward Lofton. Alicia’s father described Lofton negatively, asserting that he wanted the world to know Lofton’s true character. Additionally, Alicia’s aunt conveyed heartbreaking remarks about her niece’s untimely passing, while Alicia’s daughter, Brooklyn Johnson, spoke about how her mother’s death has forever altered her life, openly criticizing Lofton for his actions.

Lofton displayed no visible emotion during the sentencing, wearing standard green jail attire and declining the opportunity to speak in his defense.

In total, Lofton has been credited with 721 days served in jail while awaiting trial and the sentencing process. This sentence emphasizes the serious consequences of domestic violence and the tragic outcomes that can arise from toxic relationships.

The impact of this case extends beyond the courtroom, affecting the lives of those left behind by Morrison’s actions and highlighting the importance of addressing domestic violence and its severe repercussions on individuals and families.
