Attendees enjoying live music at Suburbs Fest, celebrating the local music scene.
The inaugural Suburbs Fest in Grand Rapids celebrated West Michigan’s music scene with diverse performances and a focus on mental health awareness. Events included live podcasts and fundraising concerts, uniting the community through music. Local artists showcased various genres, enriching the experience for attendees, as efforts to cultivate community connections continued post-pandemic.
Grand Rapids, Michigan – West Michigan’s vibrant music scene was on full display this past weekend with multiple events including the inaugural Suburbs Fest and a fundraising concert for mental health awareness. The weekend’s activities not only showcased local and regional talent but also aimed to unite the community through music.
Suburbs Fest, hosted by the “Rockin’ The Suburbs” podcast, marked its debut in Ada and Grand Rapids. Events kicked off on Friday night with live-band karaoke at Dirty Shame Bar & Grill, setting a lively tone for the festival.
The festivities continued on Saturday with a live podcast event held at Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill that featured performances from an array of regional artists including Max Lockwood, Caitlin Cusack, Al Wesley, Adrian Wright, and the Desmond Jones Duo. After afternoon performances, ticketed evening shows highlighted acts such as Money Soup, The Stick Arounds, and Indiana’s Frank Muffin. Among the various genres represented, Wright delivered a compelling hip-hop set.
Prior to Suburbs Fest, a notable performance took place at The Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids with the psychedelic pop band Of Montreal showcasing a set of whimsically titled songs. Additionally, on Friday, electronic-driven groups Deadbeatbad, Crystal Trench, and DeathBong entertained crowds at Bell’s Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo.
A significant component of the weekend was the concert titled “Voices of Hope: A Concert for Change”, which took place at Legacy Park in Ada on Friday. This concert featured artists like Domestic Problems, Brian Vander Ark, and Half Ton Band, and aimed to raise awareness for mental wellness. The event reflected a growing movement in the community focusing on mental health, which has gained traction in recent years, particularly as a response to the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic.
The idea for Suburbs Fest emerged after virtual music events successfully connected music fans during pandemic restrictions. Podcast hosts Jim Lenahan and Patrick Foster sought to create a live music experience that would bring together fans, regardless of their familiarity with the podcast itself. The festival’s hosts expressed excitement over exploring local music scenes and the potential for fostering community connections through a shared appreciation of music.
Throughout the weekend, many performers were interviewed by the podcast hosts, enriching the experience for attendees. The festival featured a diverse mix of music genres, including hip-hop, indie rock, electronic, pop, and dark wave, highlighting the breadth of talent in the region.
Suburbs Fest’s success has prompted organizers to expand its locations, which now stretches beyond Washington D.C. to include Grand Rapids, signifying a growing recognition for the live music movement. The festival is poised to not only entertain but also unite the community as it embraces a wide array of musical styles and talents.
As West Michigan continues to celebrate and develop its rich music scene, events like Suburbs Fest play an integral role in promoting both local artists and the importance of mental wellness through live performance.
