Grand Rapids Opens Applications for Neighborhood Match Fund

The city of Grand Rapids is now accepting project proposals for its Neighborhood Match Fund (NMF), which aims to enhance community connections through resident-led initiatives. Applications are open from June 1 to June 30, 2025, with the funding contracts ranging from $500 to $5,000.

Since its inception in 2017, the NMF has awarded over $1 million to a total of 311 projects. The upcoming funding is particularly focused on initiatives set to take place between September 2025 and February 2026, aligning with this year’s theme, “The Spirit of Generosity,” as part of the national Welcoming Week celebrations. Welcoming Week is scheduled nationwide from September 12 to September 21, 2025.

Application Details

To be eligible for funding, proposed projects must be led by residents from the impacted neighborhoods and should emphasize inclusivity and community-centered activities. Interested applicants can fill out the application on the city’s website or reach out via email at nmf@grcity.us for more information.

The selection process for the proposals will involve a review by the NMF coordinator alongside staff from the city’s Office of Equity and Engagement (OEE).

Investment in Community Projects

The city recently invested $81,800 in the previous round of the NMF, which funded 20 projects that aligned with core principles of inclusion and social justice. Projects funded in this round covered a range of initiatives focused on improving childhood literacy, promoting civic engagement, supporting arts and culture, and providing essential school supplies to children.

Applications for the Neighborhood Match Fund are accepted biannually, with the next round scheduled in December for projects planned for March through August of the following year. This structured approach helps to continuously foster philanthropy and build inclusive communities within Grand Rapids.

Background on the Neighborhood Match Fund

The Neighborhood Match Fund was established as part of Grand Rapids’ commitment to enhancing community engagement and social equity. The funding is designed to empower residents, encouraging them to take the lead in initiatives that benefit their neighborhoods. Projects that receive funding typically create stronger community ties and improve the quality of life in various ways.

Since its launch, the NMF has played a significant role in supporting diverse community-driven projects, exemplifying the city’s dedication to social justice and inclusivity. The ongoing response from community members and participants highlights the fund’s success in promoting grassroots efforts and building positive change throughout Grand Rapids.
