Grand Rapids – The Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) reported a shooting incident involving a man armed with a knife on Thursday evening. This incident took place around 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Broadway Ave. NW and 4th St. NW.
Officers responded to a domestic situation, where a man was armed with a knife inside a home and refused to leave. For more than 15 minutes, four GRPD officers negotiated with the man before any shots were fired.
As the man charged at one of the officers with the knife, two officers deployed tasers in an attempt to subdue him, but these attempts were ineffective. Consequently, the two officers discharged their weapons, striking the man multiple times. The man sustained injuries to his leg, calf, and arm, but fortunately, these injuries were not considered life-threatening.
After the shooting, the man was transported to the hospital. He has been reported to be in serious condition but was awake and talking when admitted. A family member indicated that the incident stemmed from a mental health crisis, noting that the man had been in need of help, but had been refusing it.
In accordance with department protocol, the GRPD Chief confirmed that the two officers who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative leave. The Chief expressed relief that the man’s injuries were not fatal and underscored the importance of understanding mental health factors in such situations.
Both the GRPD and Michigan State Police (MSP) are conducting investigations into the incident, with MSP taking charge as an outside agency. It has been noted that the officers involved were equipped with body-worn cameras, which will be reviewed as part of the investigation. Numerous witnesses witnessed the incident and have been cooperating with the investigators.
The public is urged to contact authorities with any information or surveillance video related to the event, as both agencies work to gain a complete understanding of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges surrounding domestic crises and mental health issues, as law enforcement continues to navigate complex situations involving individuals in need of assistance. The GRPD remains committed to thorough investigations under such circumstances to ensure community safety and transparency.
