Grand Rapids, Michigan — Dale Robertson, the president and CEO of the Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM), has announced his retirement effective December 31, 2026, after nearly 17 years of leadership. The announcement was made by the GRPM Foundation Board of Trustees on May 19, 2025.
Robertson, who has been at the helm since August 2008, has overseen a significant transformation at the museum. Under his guidance, annual attendance surged by over 200%, growing from approximately 68,000 visitors to a robust 200,000-250,000 visitors each year. This uptick in attendance underscores his effective stewardship of the institution, fostering greater community engagement and interest in the museum’s offerings.
Among his notable achievements is the launching of a $50 million capital campaign aimed at enhancing the museum’s facilities. As of now, this campaign has successfully raised $36 million, demonstrating community support for ongoing improvements. Robertson has emphasized the importance of making educational resources more accessible to the public, notably through the co-founding of the Grand Rapids Public Museum School, which aims to integrate the museum’s educational mission with local educational institutions.
In addition to increasing attendance and expanding educational programs, Robertson played a crucial role in stabilizing the museum’s finances. A significant milestone was the passing of a 10-year Kent County millage in 2016, which secured operational funding for the museum. This millage has been critical not only for the GRPM but also for the John Ball Zoo, enhancing the financial stability of cultural institutions in the area.
Robertson’s decision to retire comes following guidance he received from the late Donald Maine, who advised leaders to consider retirement when they have accomplished around 75-85% of their goals. This decision reflects a strategic commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for the museum as it continues to evolve under new leadership.
The GRPM Board of Trustees is now set to initiate the search for Robertson’s replacement, ensuring that the leadership transition occurs without interruption to the museum’s ongoing projects and community-centered initiatives. Linsey Gleason, chair of the Board of Trustees, has expressed deep gratitude for Robertson’s unwavering dedication, commendable leadership, and contributions to the museum’s mission and growth over the years.
Looking ahead, the Grand Rapids Public Museum remains focused on continuing its community-focused work during the transition period. The board and staff are dedicated to maintaining the momentum that has been built during Robertson’s tenure, aiming to build upon the successes achieved under his leadership. As Robertson prepares to depart, the museum is poised to embrace future opportunities and challenges while remaining committed to its mission of education and community engagement.
The Grand Rapids Public Museum invites the community to celebrate Robertson’s achievements during his time as CEO and to engage with the museum as it embarks on this new chapter.
