Grand Rapids — The Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM) is set to unveil its highly anticipated exhibition, SHARKS, on June 7. This engaging display, developed in collaboration with the Australian Museum, will explore the fascinating intersection of history, science, and cultural significance surrounding these remarkable creatures of the ocean.

The SHARKS exhibit will showcase a diverse array of over 100 different shark specimens and related artifacts. Among the highlights are nine life-sized models representing various shark species, including the formidable great white shark and the ancient, 270-million-year-old buzzsaw shark, a remarkable extinct species.

According to the GRPM’s vice president of marketing and public relations, the exhibition promises to be both educational and entertaining, blending fun with informative content about sharks and their importance to marine ecosystems. Visitors can immerse themselves in a cylindrical surround theater that offers a unique learning experience about various shark species, complemented by multiple audiovisual presentations located throughout the exhibition space.

The interactive elements of the exhibition are designed to engage guests of all ages. Attendees will have the opportunity to navigate through a shark’s body using a 3-D interactive scan, allowing them to understand the anatomy of these incredible animals. Additionally, they can experiment with adapting a shark to survive in different environments and take a thrilling 360-degree view from the perspective of a Hammerhead Shark.

To further enrich the educational experience, large projections and a specially designed oceanarium will be incorporated into the exhibition, adding a dynamic visual element to the learning about sharks. For those interested in a tactile experience, hands-on displays will recreate shark skin, feature a megalodon jaw, and display a great white shark tooth, providing a closer look at these important marine animals.

SHARKS will delve into the significant role that sharks have played in various cultures over the past 450 million years and will address their impact on ocean ecosystems. In addition to highlighting the historical context, the exhibition will also explore the current condition of shark populations and the critical importance of their future protection. Visitors will learn about the effects of climate change on shark habitats and what actions they can take to support shark conservation efforts.

This exhibition is designed to be suitable for individuals of all ages, making it a perfect outing for families, students, and anyone interested in marine life. It will be open to the public from June 7 to August 31, inviting community members and visitors to discover the mysteries and importance of sharks.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum aims to not only provide a captivating visual and interactive experience but also to educate individuals about the significant role these creatures play in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems and their cultural relevance. The SHARKS exhibition promises to be a memorable and enriching journey into the aquatic world of one of nature’s most intriguing predators.
