Grand Rapids Reels from Labor Day Shootings

Grand Rapids experienced heightened violence over the Labor Day weekend, marked by two separate shootings that left one man dead and three others injured. The first incident, which resulted in a fatality, occurred early Tuesday, September 2, 2025, in the 400 block of Diamond Avenue SE, near Sigsbee Street SE.

According to reports, the shooting took place around 2:30 a.m. Officers on routine patrol in the area heard gunshots and quickly responded. Upon arrival, they discovered a man lying unresponsive on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders to provide life-saving measures, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Details about the victim, whose identity has yet to be disclosed, suggest he was estimated to be between 20 and 40 years old. Chief of Police Eric Winstrom indicated that the shooting appeared to be targeted. However, at the time of reporting, no suspect information was available. The scene yielded numerous shell casings, and evidence collection was underway as part of the ongoing investigation. By 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, no eyewitnesses had come forward to provide additional information.

Previous Incident Raises Concerns

This shooting occurred just a few feet from another deadly incident that took place on August 10, 2025, in the vicinity of Logan Street SE and Diamond Avenue SE. In that incident, 38-year-old Randy Campbell was killed. Chief Winstrom pointed out the possibility of a connection between the two shootings, further alarming the local community.

Local residents have voiced their fear and frustration in light of the recent violence. Some have reported considering relocating due to their concerns for safety in the area. Community members are grappling with the impact of these violent incidents, hoping for an end to the cycle of crime affecting their neighborhood.

Second Shooting on Labor Day

In a separate yet related incident on Labor Day evening, three men were shot around 11:15 p.m. on Southeast Francis Avenue and Burton Street. Fortunately, the three victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. As of now, authorities have not released information regarding potential suspects in this second shooting but have stated that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
