With around 1,200 aspiring candidates from all corners of the country, Fillenworth is feeling the thrill as he aims to secure the top spot in his quarterfinal group.
Fillenworth’s journey started a few years back when he joined City High and quickly made a name for himself by winning “Teacher of the Year” in his very first year. With a solid five years of teaching under his belt, his passion for education shines through brightly. He dreams of making math not just a subject to be learned, but a valuable life skill that students can apply in real-world situations. His approach is simple but effective: he believes he’s not just a math teacher but a mentor in life skills, teaching his students the importance of communication and collaboration.
The competition is divided into 128 quarterfinal groups, each showcasing ten dedicated teachers, and the pressure is on. Fillenworth is competing against numerous other talented educators, including Joshua Lovendusky and Kirsten Cline, both from Benzie Central High School, who are also aiming for the title. Lovendusky is a physical education teacher, while Cline directs the school choir. The stakes are high, with the winner of this competitive event set to receive a grand prize of $25,000, a delightful trip for two to Hawaii, a special feature in Reader’s Digest, and an exciting virtual school assembly with the famed Bill Nye the Science Guy!
Fans and supporters of Fillenworth can vote for him until Thursday, April 17, at 10 p.m. Voting is free for one vote, with options to cast additional votes for a fee. To advance, Fillenworth must secure the top position in his quarterfinal group, and every vote counts!
