Inspired by her own desire to build a social network outside of her work environment, Groves turned to the popular social media platform TikTok to reach out to other women in Grand Rapids.
Groves filmed a video inviting local women to join her in forming new friendships. The post quickly gained traction, resonating with a wide audience and drawing in hundreds of women eager to participate in social activities. In light of the overwhelming interest generated by her video, Groves took the initiative to create a structured environment for the connections to happen. She established a WhatsApp group chat named ‘GR Girlies’, specifically designed for women to come together and discuss potential meetups and shared interests.
The ‘GR Girlies’ group chat saw rapid growth, as more than 700 women joined the platform, leading Groves to transition to a larger and more manageable messaging platform. With such a significant number of participants, the group has become a vital space for women in Grand Rapids to communicate and organize events.
To kick off the initiative, Groves organized a successful event featuring a group walk followed by a sunset yoga session at a local park. More than 100 women took part in the yoga event, with participants highlighting the positive impact of the gathering. Many attendees reported that they left the session not only feeling rejuvenated but also with new friendships and connections, emphasizing the community spirit that Groves aimed to cultivate.
In recognition of the supportive and empowering atmosphere fostered within the group chat, Groves expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic response from community members. Looking ahead, Groves has scheduled another exciting community event: the ‘Grand Rapids Field Day,’ set to take place on Friday from 6 to 8:30 PM at 5068 Breton Road SE.
