Grand Valley State University Women’s Golf Team Wraps Up Regular Season with Mixed Results

The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) women’s golf team has had quite a notable wrap to their regular season, participating in both the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational and the Lynn Invitational. With a blend of outcomes, the team showcased their talent amidst strong competition.

Buckeye Invitational: A Challenge in Columbus

Kicking things off in Columbus, Ohio, the Lakers found themselves at the Buckeye Invitational, where they finished in 11th place with a cumulative score of +68. The competition was fierce, with top teams such as Ohio State, Michigan State, Kent State, Rutgers, and Indiana stealing the show.

Over the course of three rounds, GVSU showcased their skills but faced ups and downs, recording team scores of 309, 317, and 326. Olivia Stoll led the charge for the Lakers, ending the tournament in a solid tie for 20th place with a score of +13, including a final round of 81 (+9). Meanwhile, other teammates, including Paula Badino, Rachael Krieger, and Julia Sanchez, contributed their efforts without specific rankings detailed.

A Strong Finish at the Lynn Invitational

Quickly shifting gears, the team then sped down to Boca Raton, Florida, for the Lynn Invitational, where they enjoyed a much more favorable outcome. The GVSU squad ended the event as runner-up, with Lynn University clinching the team title at two under par.

At this second event, GVSU had their best round of the tournament, achieving a remarkable score of 290 (+2). Ultimately, they finished the Lynn event with a total of eight over. Dallas Baptist came in third at +10, while Lee and Flagler rounded out the competition in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Once again, Olivia Stoll had her moment to shine, along with Rachael Krieger, as both finished in the top five. Their performance in Boca Raton was very encouraging as it showed their potential heading into the NCAA Division II national championship.

Building for the National Championship

Prior to these tournaments, the GVSU women’s golf team had already claimed the Super Region One Championship for the fourth consecutive time. They are geared up and ready to compete for the national title at the NCAA Division II national championship, which will take place on their home turf at The Meadows in Allendale.

Coach Rebecca Mailloux is confident about her team’s capabilities. The comfort of playing on their own course gives them an edge, as they prepare for this exciting opportunity. Allie Tyler, the team’s only senior, is optimistic, hoping that her experience will lead to better outcomes compared to her previous attempts at the national championship.

Freshman Veronica Ryan shares some of that enthusiasm, feeling a surge of confidence playing at their home course. In addition, Erin Johnson, a senior golfer from Plymouth High School, recently signed with GVSU. With a promising high school career behind her—averaging a score of 78 per 18 holes and achieving multiple top-ten finishes—Johnson is ready to embark on her collegiate journey.

Her commitment to improving her game through participation in summer tournaments shows her determination. With a bright future ahead, GVSU’s women’s golf team seems poised for success as they enter the national championship, bringing the spirit of teamwork and passion for the sport along for the ride.
