A free hip-hop yoga class was held at Pleasant Park, attracting around 50 participants. Led by Valarie James, this initiative is part of the Grand Rapids Free Outdoor Fitness series, aimed at promoting physical fitness and mental wellness in a supportive environment. The classes, which run until August 2025, offer a variety of fitness activities and are free for all. Participants can enjoy energetic movement and relaxation techniques while engaging with the community, making fitness an enjoyable experience for all.

Grand Rapids – On Thursday evening, approximately 50 participants gathered at Pleasant Park for a free hip-hop yoga class aimed at blending energetic movement with relaxation techniques. Led by Valarie James, owner of VSJ Fitness Studio, this class is part of the Grand Rapids Free Outdoor Fitness series, which encourages stress relief through an enjoyable workout.

The hip-hop yoga class, running from 7 to 7:45 p.m., brings together ground-based elements and rhythmic music to enhance the experience. Designed to cater to all fitness levels, the class emphasizes modifications and laughter, ensuring that everyone can participate and find joy in the session.

This week’s class is one of many offered as part of a larger initiative that began on May 12. The Grand Rapids Free Outdoor Fitness series will continue through August 22, 2025, marking its 10th anniversary this year. The initiative includes nearly 100 drop-in fitness classes at a total of 10 different locations across the city, providing participants with a range of activities such as yoga, Zumba, glute aerobics, dance, strength training, and barre.

All classes in the series are free of charge and do not require prior registration, making them accessible to individuals with varying levels of experience. Participants are encouraged to bring their own water and, for most sessions, a yoga mat or towel. The classes are subject to cancellation due to weather conditions, with any adjustments communicated through the city’s Parks and Recreation Facebook page or a dedicated cancellation hotline.

The Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department, in collaboration with Priority Health, organizes the fitness series, which aims to foster community health and well-being through inclusive outdoor exercise opportunities. The classes focus not only on physical fitness but also on promoting social engagement and mental wellness within the community.

The outdoor fitness initiative reflects a growing trend towards free community-based exercise programs, which have been shown to enhance public health by encouraging people to stay active in a supportive environment. By providing diverse fitness options, the series accommodates a wide audience, making it easier for residents to engage in physical activity while enjoying the outdoors.

Overall, the hip-hop yoga class at Pleasant Park symbolizes a commitment to making fitness an enjoyable and communal experience, reinforcing the importance of staying active and healthy in a welcoming setting.
