Grand Rapids, MI – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced a $3 million investment for a major rehabilitation project on a section of I-96, set to commence on May 12, 2025. The project aims to improve a 3-mile stretch of the interstate located between E. Beltline Avenue and Cascade Road.

The rehabilitation work will include asphalt resurfacing and joint repairs designed to enhance the road’s condition and provide a smoother driving experience for commuters. MDOT officials have indicated that the project is expected to be completed by mid-July 2025, with various traffic modifications taking effect throughout the duration of the work.

Drivers can anticipate lane closures, ramp closures, and total closures on weekday nights. Specifically, closures will be enforced from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. on weeknights, while weekends will also see disruptions, with closures lasting until 9 a.m. on both Saturdays and Sundays. MDOT has cautioned that there will be intermittent ramp closures at interchanges such as Beltline, Fulton Street, and Cascade.

Additionally, total closures on weeknights will occur at the intersection of I-96 and I-196. During these closures, westbound traffic will be diverted to Cascade Avenue, while eastbound traffic will be rerouted to the Beltline. Motorists are urged to plan their routes accordingly and allow for extra travel time as the project unfolds.

This rehabilitation project is part of MDOT’s broader efforts to enhance road conditions throughout the West Michigan area, which has recently been associated with frequent roadwork inconveniences for drivers. As MDOT continues to focus on maintaining and upgrading its highways, the need for periodic construction remains crucial to ensure the safety and efficiency of the transportation network.

Residents and commuter traffic in the Grand Rapids region will need to stay informed about these changes as construction progresses. Not only does this project represent an investment in infrastructure, but it also emphasizes the ongoing commitment to improve travel quality for thousands of motorists daily.

By investing in rehabilitation efforts, MDOT aims to reduce maintenance costs in the long run and enhance overall safety for drivers. Completed improvements should lead to better driving conditions, reduced travel times, and fewer vehicle damages due to poor road quality.

As the May project start date approaches, MDOT encourages all travelers to keep informed through their official channels regarding any further updates or changes to the construction schedule. The department remains dedicated to minimizing disruption and providing a smooth transition for all motorists navigating through these crucial routes.
