Kent County Approves $80 Million for Housing Projects

News Summary

The Michigan State Housing Development Authority has sanctioned nearly $80 million for three major housing projects in Kent County. The funding, aimed at enhancing affordable housing access, includes the construction of HōM Flats, which will add 200 new units in Wyoming, along with renovations at Countryside Townhouses and 21 Weston in Grand Rapids. These efforts are part of a strategy to address the critical housing needs of low-income families in the region.

Kent County, Michigan – The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) Board has approved nearly $80 million in funding for three significant housing projects in Kent County, aimed at addressing the critical housing needs of residents. The funding, sanctioned on July 22, 2025, is part of a broader initiative to enhance access to affordable housing throughout the area.

The largest allocation of $39 million is designated for the construction of HōM Flats in Wyoming, which will deliver 200 new housing units. Located at 1401 Prairie Parkway, near the intersection of 28th Street and Burlingame Avenue, HōM Flats will feature 12 accessible units. This project targets households earning between 40% to 70% of the area median income (AMI) and represents the third phase of the HōM Flats development, which already encompasses around 400 units. Furthermore, it is being developed by Magnus Capital as part of the city’s ongoing City Center development plans.

The City Center initiative includes the construction of a pedestrian bridge across 28th Street, which is currently underway, enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents.

An additional $18.5 million has been allocated for the acquisition and rehabilitation of Countryside Townhouses, a 146-unit development located at 4885 Green Oak Lane, off 48th Street in Kentwood. This project aims to serve households earning 60% of AMI or below, thereby providing crucial support for low-income families who face housing difficulties.

The third project, 21 Weston in Grand Rapids, will receive $21.4 million for the rehabilitation of 96 units, including 10 accessible units. This renovation effort is expected to upgrade the living conditions and affordability for the residents in the area.

The MSHDA Board’s funding decision underscores the ongoing efforts to combat housing shortages and foster community development within Michigan. By investing in these projects, MSHDA aims to improve the quality of life for residents by expanding housing options and ensuring accessible living arrangements.

Access to affordable housing has become increasingly pivotal in Michigan, as demand outstrips supply in many local communities. The recent funding allocations reflect an understanding of the pressing need for housing solutions that cater to diverse income levels and family sizes. By focusing on projects that serve lower-income households, MSHDA is committed to fostering equitable growth in the region.

As housing needs continue to evolve, the concerted efforts by MSHDA and its development partners in Kent County are a step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible living environment for all residents. The approval of these significant funding allocations is anticipated to stimulate the local economy by generating construction jobs and enhancing community stability in the long run.

The completion of these housing projects is expected to bring a positive impact to Kent County, reaffirming the state’s commitment to enhancing quality of life through better housing solutions.
