Grand Rapids, MI – The Kent County Parks Department has launched a new initiative called “Nature Neighbors,” aimed at encouraging outdoor engagement through a series of low-cost, nature-based programs. The collaboration with the Blandford Nature Center is designed to promote greater public participation in enjoying and appreciating natural environments.

The Nature Neighbors series will occur this spring and summer, with events scheduled at various parks across Kent County. The first event kicks off on Tuesday, May 6, at Wabasis Lake Park, located at 11220 Springhill Drive in Greenville. Following this inaugural event, additional programs will take place at other parks, including Fallasburg Park, Townsend Park, Long Lake Park, Lake Wabasis Park, Caledonia Lakeside Park, and Millennium Park.

This series includes interactive programs such as ‘Paint in the Park’ and ‘Introduction to Birding.’ These activities are designed to engage individuals of all ages and backgrounds, fostering both education and recreation through direct interaction with nature. The Kent County Parks Department aims to enrich public parks and foster community spirit by bringing families, friends, and nature enthusiasts together.

To support this initiative, start-up funds have been provided through a collaborative effort of private donors who believe in the importance of connecting communities with the local environment. This financial backing has made it possible for the parks department to offer these programs at a low cost to participants, making nature exploration more accessible to everyone.

The director of the Kent County Parks Department highlighted the partnership’s overarching goal of transforming public spaces into enriching environments that foster learning, inspiration, and community connectivity. The initiative seeks to inject new energy into local parks, turning them into educational hubs where individuals can gather, learn about nature, and enjoy engaging outdoor activities.

Beyond recreational opportunities, Nature Neighbors aims to deepen participants’ understanding and appreciation of the natural world around them. Izzy Saylor, the Off-Site Programs Manager at Blandford Nature Center, emphasized how these programs are crafted to help people form meaningful connections with nature, which can lead to a greater awareness of environmental issues and an overall enhancement of community well-being.

More information regarding the ongoing series, including specific dates, times, and registration, can easily be found on the Nature Neighbors website. Community members and nature enthusiasts are encouraged to consider participating in the events to experience firsthand the enriching offerings of Kent County’s natural spaces.

As this initiative unfolds, the Kent County Parks Department and the Blandford Nature Center look forward to welcoming participants to explore the beauty and resources of the region’s parks, fostering a culture of outdoor appreciation and environmental stewardship for generations to come.
