Lotus Brew Coffee aims to be an inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community.
Lotus Brew Coffee, a queer-owned cafe in Grand Rapids, is moving from its farmers market roots to a permanent location featuring a dry bar. Set to open in 2024, the cafe will offer a vibrant space for non-alcoholic socializing, targeting the LGBTQ+ community and enhancing pride celebrations. Besides coffee, it aims to be a hub for events and community initiatives, including a banned book library and food pantry, emphasizing inclusivity and accessibility for all patrons.
Grand Rapids – Lotus Brew Coffee, a queer-owned cafe, is transitioning from its farmers market origins to a permanent location with plans to become Grand Rapids’ only legally licensed queer dry bar. Opened in the summer of 2024 in East Hills, the cafe is set to provide a welcoming space for patrons seeking non-alcoholic social alternatives, enhancing the community’s offerings for pride celebrations.
Since its beginnings at the Fulton Street Farmer’s Market, where it operated as a booth, Lotus Brew has seen substantial growth. Following a successful soft opening and a subsequent grand reopening at 211 Diamond Avenue SE, the cafe is now focusing on expanding its concept. The planned dry bar will feature mocktails, allowing individuals to celebrate pride while enjoying a vibrant atmosphere without alcohol.
Recognizing the diverse needs of the LGBTQ+ community, Lotus Brew aims to create an inclusive environment that provides an alternative to traditional gay bars, which may not appeal to everyone. To enhance customer experience, the cafe plans to change its lighting and introduce new events, responding to community feedback and interest.
Lotus Brew Coffee is committed to building a strong connection with its community by hosting events and initiatives. Weekly activities will be announced on the cafe’s website, with special Pride nights scheduled for June 21-22. These events will provide 18+ non-alcoholic celebrations from 5 to 8 p.m., catering to those wishing to join in the festivities in a sober space.
The cafe’s growth has been remarkable. In its initial phase, the new location transformed into a fully operational coffee shop in just over two weeks after acquiring the space on June 15. During its soft opening, the cafe served between 300 and 400 lattes in a single day, demonstrating significant community interest and appetite for its offerings.
In addition to coffee, Lotus Brew Coffee embraces its role as a community hub by hosting various groups, such as Grand Rapids Gamers and the Grand Rapids Queer Fiber Arts group. The cafe is also expanding its community initiatives, introducing a free banned book library and a community food pantry to serve the local population better. Upcoming plans include establishing a queer makers market, hosting tasting parties, and organizing coffee workshops aimed at home baristas.
Accessibility is a priority for Lotus Brew, as feedback has indicated challenges for wheelchair users at the new location. In collaboration with the East Hills Business Association and the city, efforts are underway to address these concerns. The cafe’s owner has personal experience navigating disability, reinforcing their commitment to ensuring that everyone can access the cafe comfortably.
The new location’s operating hours are designed to accommodate a variety of schedules, open Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. With these hours, Lotus Brew Coffee seeks to provide a safe community space where all individuals can relax, connect, and be themselves.
As the only queer dry bar in Grand Rapids becomes a reality, Lotus Brew is poised to make a significant impact on the local community, embracing diversity, fostering inclusivity, and celebrating pride in a supportive environment.
