Lansing, Michigan – A total of $9 million in grants has been awarded to twenty museums and nonprofit organizations across Michigan to support educational programs, as announced by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO). This funding is intended to stabilize, grow, and enhance the educational missions of the grantees, which include several notable institutions located in Southeast Michigan.

The grants will allow recipient organizations to expand access to their services, engage a wider audience, and provide high-quality educational programs. Each organization is also expected to attract additional private investments, further amplifying their community impact. The initiative is part of the Community Museum Grant program, which runs from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2029.

Among the major recipients is the Great Lakes Children’s Museum in Traverse City, which has been awarded over $345,000. The Michilimackinac Historical Society in St. Ignace will also receive more than $614,000. Other notable recipients include the Detroit Zoo, the Henry Ford Museum, and the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant. The John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids will utilize its grant of $409,600 to enhance its Master Plan.

Specifically, the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant plans to use its funding for essential building upgrades, including the construction of new restrooms and elevators. Meanwhile, the Henry Ford Museum will allocate its grant toward the reconstruction of the Jackson Home, a site significant to civil rights history. Improvements will also be made at the Discovery Trails within the Detroit Zoo, aiming to enhance visitor interactions and educational experiences.

The importance of museums to Michigan’s cultural and economic landscape has been emphasized by LEO Director Susan Corbin. Corbin noted that museums play a critical role in promoting learning, fostering creativity, and strengthening community ties, all of which contribute to economic growth.

Michigan is home to a diverse collection of over 650 museums, ranging from sprawling institutions to smaller community-focused centers. These organizations serve a wide array of communities statewide, making them vital threads in the fabric of local culture and heritage.

Lisa Craig Brisson, Executive Director of the Michigan Museums Association, has acknowledged the positive impact that public funding can have on museums. She highlighted that museums are essential spaces for lifelong learning and community connection, reinforcing their role as educational hubs.

For organizations interested in future funding opportunities, further information on eligibility requirements for the Community Museum Grant program can be obtained through the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.
