Residents engaging in community planning in Grand Rapids

News Summary

Grand Rapids residents can now apply for the Neighborhood Match Fund (NMF) grants to support community-led projects aimed at improving local connections and civic pride. With funding ranging from $500 to $5,000, eligible projects must be initiated by neighborhood residents and contribute to initiatives scheduled between September 2025 and February 2026. The NMF encourages inclusivity and community involvement, focusing on proposals that align with the themes of Welcoming Week 2025. Applications are open until June 30.

Grand Rapids is inviting residents to apply for the Neighborhood Match Fund (NMF) grants, which will support community-led projects aimed at enhancing connections and fostering civic pride. Applications for funding are open until June 30, and projects can receive between $500 and $5,000 to implement their ideas.

To be eligible for these grants, projects must be led by residents from the neighborhood where they will take place, ensuring that the initiatives are grounded in local community needs and aspirations. Funded projects are expected to occur between September 2025 and February 2026. The NMF, coordinated by the City’s Office of Equity and Engagement, emphasizes inclusivity and community-centered approaches, encouraging residents to create proposals with input from their neighbors.

This grant cycle features a new project category linked to Welcoming Week 2025, scheduled to occur from September 12–21 nationwide. The theme for this year’s Welcoming Week is “The Spirit of Generosity,” highlighting philanthropy and the importance of creating inclusive spaces within communities.

Applications are evaluated based on their eligibility and alignment with the program’s goals by the NMF coordinator and staff from the Office of Equity and Engagement. Proposals are then reviewed by a community-led team, which recommends projects for funding approval. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to collaborate with city staff to refine their project plans and develop sustainable outreach strategies.

The NMF has a significant history of supporting local initiatives. Since its inception in 2017, the program has invested over $1 million in a total of 311 community projects. In the most recent funding round, the NMF awarded $81,800 to 20 community-led projects, which addressed various needs such as childhood literacy, civic engagement, and local art initiatives.

The city facilitates two rounds of the NMF program each year, inviting applications in June and December. Projects funded must consistently align with the overarching goals of promoting social justice and inclusion, reinforcing the city’s commitment to fostering diverse and vibrant neighborhoods.

Residents interested in applying for the Neighborhood Match Fund can submit their applications through the official city website at grandrapidsmi.gov/nmf. Any inquiries regarding the application process or project eligibility can be directed to the city’s administrative email at nmf@grcity.us.

In summary, the Neighborhood Match Fund presents a valuable opportunity for Grand Rapids residents to enhance their communities through funding for impactful projects. The emphasis on inclusion and community input aims to foster a stronger sense of belonging and collaboration among residents, contributing to the city’s efforts in building thriving neighborhoods.
