Grand Rapids Breaks Ground on $9 Million Oxford Trail Improvement Project
Grand Rapids city officials and community leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Oxford Trail improvement project on October 1, 2025. This significant project is set to enhance the connectivity and accessibility of the nonmotorized trail for residents of the southwest side of the city.
The Oxford Trail improvement project will expand the existing trail, connecting Oxford Street SW to Hall Street and Godfrey Avenue. As part of the improvements, existing trail segments between Wealthy Street and Oxford Street will be rebuilt. The upgrades are designed to better connect neighborhoods such as Roosevelt Park and Black Hills to downtown Grand Rapids, the Grand River, and the Grand River Greenway trail system.
The total cost for the improvement project is estimated at $9 million. Funding for the project will come from several sources, including $1 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and an $8 million grant from Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. This grant is a part of a larger $55 million state funding initiative received in 2022 for the Grand River Greenway project.
Project Features and Timeline
The Oxford Trail improvement project will include numerous new amenities aimed at enhancing the outdoor experience for the community. These amenities will feature:
- An accessible playground
- Outdoor fitness equipment
- A small performance amphitheater
- Several community gathering spaces
- A half-court basketball court under the Oxford Street bridge
Additionally, enhancements such as new asphalt pavement, lighting, fencing, signage, benches, picnic tables, bike racks, drinking fountains, and outdoor grills will be made along the trail. The project aims to foster community engagement and celebrate the neighborhood’s cultural and artistic history.
The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026 and has been awarded to Ada-based Erhardt Construction, which will lead the reconstruction and expansion efforts. A commitment has been made for 15% of the work to be subcontracted to a Micro Local Business Enterprise (MLBE) firm, emphasizing support for local businesses.
Community Input and Objectives
Throughout the design phase of the project, community feedback was actively sought to ensure that the enhancements will serve the needs of local residents effectively. The project is intended to create a more interconnected Grand Rapids, particularly benefiting those living in the southwest neighborhoods who will gain better access to recreational facilities and community spaces.
Currently, the existing Oxford Trail extends from Wealthy Street, over the Grand River, and south past Market Avenue to Oxford Street. The planned expansions and improvements promise to offer a more accessible and enjoyable experience for the users of the trail, helping to enrich the fabric of the Grand Rapids community.
