Grand Rapids, Michigan, mourns the passing of Paul Lee, a revered restaurateur and community leader, who died on Saturday, May 3, at the age of 51. Lee’s contributions to the local dining scene and the community will be remembered as a profound legacy.
Originally from Seoul, South Korea, Lee was adopted by Arnold and Kristin Lee and moved to the United States at the age of three. He graduated from East Grand Rapids High School and later earned a degree from Western Michigan University. In partnership with his wife, Jessica Lee, he co-owned All In Hospitality and was instrumental in launching a series of popular restaurants in the East Hills neighborhood along Wealthy Street SE. Their first establishment, The Winchester, opened in 2008 at 648 Wealthy St. SE. Following this success, they established Donkey Taqueria in 2013 and Hancock in 2019, all of which became significant dining destinations in Grand Rapids.
Despite being diagnosed with cancer in 2016, Lee did not allow his illness to define him. He continued to embrace life and actively participate in his family life as a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Jessica, and their three sons: Oscar, Harvey, and Otis. Lee’s birth mother passed away when he was just three, and he grew up alongside eight siblings.
Lee’s contributions extended beyond the kitchens of his restaurants. He was recognized as a leading figure in the Grand Rapids area, receiving accolades such as being named one of the most influential leaders by Crain’s Grand Rapids in 2024. His passion for the local dining scene was mirrored in his service on the Uptown Corridor Improvement Authority and the Business Improvement District boards, enhancing the area’s vibrancy and appeal.
Fellow restaurateurs and community members have expressed their condolences, highlighting Lee’s enthusiasm and impact on Grand Rapids. His restaurants not only catered to the community’s appetite but also fostered a sense of togetherness and celebration of culinary arts.
A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 7, from 4 PM to 7 PM at Zaagman Memorial Chapel. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, May 8, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 10:30 AM, followed by a luncheon. In honor of Lee, a Celebration of Life event is planned for May 16 from 5 PM to 9 PM at Eastern Avenue Hall.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the START Midwest Center for Cancer Research in memory of Paul Lee, reflecting his enduring spirit and commitment to life even in the face of challenges.
As the community mourns his loss, Paul Lee will be remembered not just for his culinary achievements, but also for his passionate engagement with the Grand Rapids community, leaving behind a rich legacy of love, resilience, and influence.
