F-15EX fighter jets ready for deployment at Selfridge.
On April 29, President Trump announced that Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan will receive 21 F-15EX fighter jets. This acquisition, part of a modernization effort, will replace the aging A-10s and is seen as vital for local economic stability. Governor Whitmer played a key role in securing this mission, which is expected to have significant economic impacts for the region, supporting jobs and military operations. The F-15EX jets are expected to arrive by 2028 and will enhance the base’s defense capabilities.
Harrison Township, Michigan – On April 29, President Donald Trump announced that Selfridge Air National Guard Base will receive 21 F-15EX fighter jets. This significant acquisition marks an important milestone during Trump’s 100th day in office and is part of a broader effort to modernize the U.S. Air Force fleet.
Trump described the incoming F-15EX jets as “brand new” and indicated that they will be stationed at Selfridge for the long term. The introduction of these advanced fighter jets is intended to replace the base’s aging fleet of A-10 “Thunderbolt II” aircraft, which are nearing the end of their operational life.
The decision to transition to the F-15EX comes after concerted lobbying efforts from Michigan’s political leaders, who expressed concerns about the base’s future amid fear of potential closure. Without a replacement mission, the loss of Selfridge could have significantly impacted the local economy, threatening nearly $1 billion in economic activity for Macomb County.
Maj. Gen. Paul Rogers of the Michigan National Guard acknowledged the pivotal role played by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in securing this new fighter mission for the state. The anticipated arrival of the F-15EX jets is projected for 2028.
Whitmer’s office has indicated that Selfridge Air National Guard Base has an estimated economic impact of $850 million on Michigan and supports approximately 30,000 jobs across various sectors. The base plays host to over 40 commands, incorporating multiple branches of the military, including the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Customs & Border Protection.
Currently, Selfridge employs around 3,000 full-time civilian and military personnel and houses an additional 3,000 members of the Air and Army National Guard and Reserve components. Established during World War I, Selfridge continues to serve as a hub for significant military operations and training exercises.
The base, which currently relies on 21 A-10 aircraft, is expected to retire these planes by 2029. Additionally, the F-15EX acquisition is part of a broader modernization effort at Selfridge, which is also set to receive a squadron of 12 KC-46A refueling tanker aircraft, intended to replace the old KC-135 planes by the same year. These new tankers will enhance the base’s capabilities for refueling and cargo transport.
The transition to F-15EX jets comes after prior unsuccessful attempts to secure F-35A training capabilities for Selfridge, with Ebbing Air National Guard Base being selected instead. The F-15EX fighter jets, built by Boeing, are characterized by their advanced capabilities, including a remarkable speed of 1,875 mph, a range of 3,450 miles, and the ability to operate at altitudes up to 65,000 feet. They can carry a payload of up to 29,500 pounds and are capable of utilizing a wide variety of weaponry, including AMRAAM missiles.
The anticipated arrival of the F-15EX jets is expected to fortify Selfridge Air National Guard Base’s position, ensuring it remains an integral component of the U.S. military’s tactical defense strategy. With this development, officials are optimistic about the lasting economic and strategic benefits that the new fighter jets will bring to Michigan and the broader national security landscape.
