Grand Rapids, Michigan – A tragic car crash on Mother’s Day has claimed the life of Colleen Ligtvoet, a 65-year-old woman from Stanwood, Michigan. The devastating incident has left her family heartbroken as they remember Ligtvoet as the heart of their family and a dedicated single mother.

Ligtvoet raised her daughters, Shannon Kivinen and Heather East, on the west side of Grand Rapids and was actively involved in their lives. She never missed an important event, whether it was a birthday celebration or helping with schoolwork. Her daughters indicate that the lessons and values she imparted continue to shape their approach to parenting as they raise their own children.

On the morning of Mother’s Day, Ligtvoet spent meaningful time with her mother, daughters, and grandchildren, creating cherished memories with her family. She was known for her creativity and thoughtfulness, having established personal traditions for each of her grandchildren. For example, she would gift them custom Christmas ornaments tailored to their individual personalities, ensuring that each grandchild felt special.

The tragic turn of events occurred later that day when Ligtvoet was involved in a collision at approximately 4:40 p.m. at the intersection of Pierce Road and 130th Avenue in Mecosta County. She was struck by a vehicle driven by Jordan Scott, a 38-year-old man from Rockford, who was heading south on 130th Avenue when the accident occurred. Ligtvoet was traveling eastbound at the time of the crash.

Following the collision, Scott sustained serious injuries and required airlifting to a hospital for medical assistance. Additionally, one of his passengers also suffered injuries from the accident. Scott has since been charged with several serious offenses, including operating under the influence causing death.

Ligtvoet’s family has faced the heartbreaking task of informing her grandchildren about their beloved “MeMe’s” passing. The loss has struck them deeply as they navigate their grief and try to explain the situation to the young ones, who were closely bonded with Ligtvoet. The family is now sharing their tragic story in hopes of raising awareness about the dangers of drunk driving, underscoring the message that “no drink is worth a life.”

As the family mourns, they find solace in the memories and traditions that Ligtvoet built during her lifetime. Her legacy continues through the love shared among family members, and they are committed to keeping her spirit alive by cherishing the moments they spent together as well as instilling the lessons she taught them into future generations.

The community is also rallying around the Ligtvoet family during this difficult time, with many expressing their condolences and supporting efforts to discourage drunk driving. The family’s advocacy emphasizes the ongoing need for awareness and preventive measures related to alcohol consumption and road safety.

Colleen Ligtvoet’s life represented a deep commitment to family and love. As her family reflects on her impact, they are determined to ensure that her legacy will endure through the memories, stories, and traditions that define their family bond.
