Wheeling, West Virginia – The Wheeling University Volleyball team is off to a challenging start this season, currently holding a record of 0-4 after competing in the Grand Valley State Invitational in Allendale, Michigan. This invitational took place from September 12 to September 13, 2025, where the Cardinals faced several formidable opponents over the course of the tournament.

Wheeling began the tournament with a match against Northern Michigan, where they secured their first set but ultimately fell short, losing the match 3-1. They encountered further difficulties in their second match against the ranked University of West Florida, resulting in a 3-0 loss. The next opponent, Spring Hill College, saw Wheeling take a promising lead by winning the first two sets; however, they could not maintain the momentum, losing the match 3-2. In their fourth match, the Cardinals faced #15 ranked Southwest Minnesota State, which ended in another 3-0 defeat.

Despite the challenges faced, there were notable individual performances from the team. Junior Cami Black stood out by leading the team with 47 kills throughout the tournament, achieving a hitting percentage of .172. She recorded a career-high 15 kills in the match against Northern Michigan and added a double-double in the match against Spring Hill, finishing with 15 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Megan Platt was exceptional on defense, leading the team with 47 digs and averaging 3.36 digs per set throughout the tournament. Looking ahead, Wheeling’s schedule continues to be challenging, as they are set to compete against Hillsdale College, the #13 ranked Grand Valley State, and Tiffin. These matches provide an opportunity for the Cardinals to build momentum as they prepare to return to their home court at the Alma Grace McDonough Center.

The start of Wheeling’s Mountain East Conference (MEC) play was more promising. On September 29, 2025, the team achieved a significant milestone by securing a 3-1 victory over West Virginia State. This marked Wheeling’s first 1-0 start in MEC play since the 2022 season. Following this match, Cami Black was recognized as the MEC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week due to her outstanding performance. Furthermore, Kendall Kupper, a freshman libero, was honored with the MEC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week award for her notable 34 digs during the match against West Virginia State.

Wheeling will continue its divisional play with a match against Fairmont State on October 2, 2025. Historically, the Cardinals have had strong performances against Fairmont State, holding a commanding 49-12 lead in their all-time series. The upcoming matches will be crucial for the team as they work to improve their overall record and establish a stronger presence in the MEC.
