WALKER, Mich. — Riders and families can try out the new eight-mile mountain bike network at Johnson Park in Walker on Saturday, Oct. 24, when Kent County Parks and the West Michigan Mountain Biking Alliance host a free jamboree starting at 10 a.m.
The day at the park, 4048 Butterworth St. SW, includes a community ride, trail tours with guides, chances to test-ride bikes and a free lunch. It follows a Friday ribbon cutting set for 1 p.m.
The trails are part of a $2.7 million makeover that also added a bigger parking lot, a four-season family restroom, a replacement playground and covered places to gather. Routes run from easy loops for beginners to faster descents for skilled riders, with adaptive features for riders with different mobility needs.
The largest share, $1.6 million, was federal money approved by the Kent County Board of Commissioners. Another $540,000 in federal money reached the project by way of Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. A state natural resources trust fund grant supplied $400,000, and the parks foundation and the biking group raised $160,000. The park is the westernmost trailhead of the county’s Grand River Greenway.
