ROCKFORD, Ill. — The Grand Rapids Griffins jumped out to a three-goal cushion at the BMO Center on Saturday night and still went home with a 6-4 loss to the Rockford IceHogs.
Dylan James opened the scoring on a power play, Noah Dower Nilsson added a second goal and Axel Sandin-Pellikka made it 3-0 during a 5-on-3 advantage, all in the first period.
Rockford answered with five goals in the second period, two of them from Marek Vanacker, and carried a 5-3 edge into the third. Jacob Bryson pulled the Griffins within one late, but an empty-net goal by A.J. Spellacy closed it out.
The defeat snapped a nine-game point streak and was the first regulation loss for Grand Rapids since Oct. 10. Wilmer Skoog had three assists.
The Griffins came into the night first in the AHL in scoring at 4.00 goals per game, and they now stand 10-2-1-1. The two clubs meet again Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.
