Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Public Museum on Monday reopened its Anishinaabek Indigenous history exhibit after a redesign that adds new multimedia features for guests.

The museum announced the renovation in late 2024. The reimagined exhibit now features holographic visuals, hands-on experiences and an immersive interior design, along with historical materials and three new murals created by West Michigan Indigenous artists.

The redesign was developed through consultation with Tribal leaders and community members on the Eshtoojik Advisory Council, a name that means the ones who create. The museum says the exhibit includes Grand River connections, sensory experiences and works by Anishinaabe artists.

The murals on the third floor explore the Anishinaabe Creation Story, Modern Anishinaabek of Grand Rapids and the Seven Grandparent Teachings.

The Anishinaabek exhibit first opened at the museum in 1994. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for college students and children ages 3 to 17, with reduced admission for Kent County residents.
