GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Drivers and shoppers heading into the West Side of Grand Rapids will soon pass under one of three new gateway arches, part of a $1.7 million effort to give the area’s business districts a shared identity.
Each of the three main commercial streets will get one arch, placed just west of U.S. 131 where the shops begin. Together they mark the Stockbridge, West Fulton and Leonard districts.
The project belongs to the West Side Corridor Improvement Authority. That kind of board keeps a share of the extra property tax that flows in as a district grows and puts it back into improvements, and most of the arch budget comes from taxes paid by businesses inside the district.
City officials said construction would start within weeks, and the arches are expected to be finished next spring. The city is also funding a $75,000 pedestrian safety project on the Michigan Street corridor, with new flashing crossing beacons, that it expects to complete in November.
