GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Public Schools board narrowed its superintendent search Saturday, moving three candidates ahead after a special meeting to review the semifinalists.
One candidate drew the backing of all nine board members. Two others advanced with majority support. The board has not released any names, and district officials say applicants stay confidential until finalists are formally chosen at the board meeting on Monday, Oct. 26.
Finalists will spend Wednesday, Oct. 28, in Grand Rapids touring schools and programs and meeting community groups. Their interviews with the board are open to the public at 5 p.m. that day at GRPS University, 1400 Fuller Ave. NE, and will also stream online.
The search firm, Ray & Associates, reached 2,315 people across all 50 states, and 35 completed applications. Board members said Saturday they want someone with classroom experience who understands special education needs.
The new leader will replace Superintendent Leadriane Roby, whose contract was extended one more year to June 2027. The district held 20 focus groups and several town halls this summer and fall to shape the job profile.
