Character

Heritage Hill is Grand Rapids' most historically significant neighborhood — a preserved collection of 19th and early 20th century architecture ranging from modest workers' cottages to grand Victorian mansions. The neighborhood attracts history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and urban professionals who value proximity to downtown, walkability, and the neighborhood's distinctive character. The Heritage Hill Association is one of Michigan's model preservation organizations.

History

Heritage Hill was developed primarily between 1850 and 1910, as Grand Rapids grew wealthy from its furniture manufacturing industry. Lumber barons, furniture makers, and civic leaders built grand homes along the ridge east of downtown. The neighborhood fell into decline in the mid-20th century before a sustained preservation effort beginning in the 1960s led to National Historic District designation and one of Michigan's most successful urban renewal stories.
