GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Griffins are losing their hottest player for now, as goaltender Michal Postava has been summoned by the Detroit Red Wings for the rest of their trip out west.
Griffins coach Dan Watson shared the news Wednesday night after Grand Rapids edged the Manitoba Moose 4-3 at Van Andel Arena. Watson did not give a reason for the move, and Detroit had not said whether an injury to John Gibson or Daniil Tarasov was behind it.
Postava, 24, has won all four of his AHL starts this season, stopping .954 of the shots he has faced and allowing 1.25 goals per game. He went 17-6 with a 1.71 average for Grand Rapids last season after arriving from the Czech league, where he led Brno Kometa to a title.
To cover the net, the Griffins signed veteran goalie Jamie Phillips, 33, a former Michigan Tech player, to a tryout deal as the backup against Manitoba, and Detroit moved Carter Gylander up from Toledo of the ECHL. The Red Wings were set to face the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday as part of a four-game road swing.
