GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Two adults went to the hospital Saturday evening after fire broke out in a single-story home on Russwood Street NE on the north side of Grand Rapids, Mich., and firefighters had to bring one of them out.
The Grand Rapids Fire Department got the call at 5:56 p.m. Engine 9 rolled from the Plainfield Avenue station and pulled up roughly three minutes later to flames at the rear of the house, near Coit Avenue and 3 Mile Road, Capt. Matt Dumond said.
Word that someone might still be inside sent crews straight in. They located a man on the main floor, carried him out and treated him before he was taken to the hospital. A second adult escaped without help and was also hospitalized. The condition of both was not released.
The firefighters union local reported the home sits in the 600 block of the street. Two dogs were brought out and cared for at the scene, and crews spent the evening chasing hot spots in the basement. What started the fire is still being investigated.
